By Manolo B. Jara – MANILA: Philippine President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino ordered the release of $30 million to implement a major facelift and transform the country’s rundown premier airport into a world class facility, a top Malacanang official reported on Monday.
Secretary Florencio Abad of the Department of Budget and Management, said the project also aims to remove Terminal 1 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia-1) from its derisive description as “the worldís worst airport” based on a report from an interactive website.
Naia, the former Manila International Airport, was named after President Aquino’s father and namesake the late opposition senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino and leader against the Ferdinand Marcos dictatorship, who was assassinated upon his arrival in the Philippines in August 1983.
According to Abad, the $30 million will be used for the Naia retrofitting, construction of a rapid exit taxiway to minimize congestion and rehabilitation of the facilityís 92 toilets.
“If we are to improve Naia 1, we must first address the structural integrity of the terminal for the safety of travelers,” Abad explained.
